Heroes...or Bad Parents?

http://abcnews.go.com/US/caught-tape-colorado-couple-stop-attempted-carjacking-save/story?id=12241038&page=1

"Good Morning America" characterized these parents as heroes. I'm glad they stopped the carjacking, but...these parents really should NOT be hailed as heroes. This could have been prevented simply & easily by turning off the ignition & removing the keys when they got out of the car. This is Basics 101: NEVER leave the keys in your car when you aren't in it. The would-be carjacker knew the car was running & chose the car because of that fact. Neither the news story nor the announcers' comments mention anything about prevention or talk about the parents' basic irresponsibility that led to this situation.

Also, while it may be inconvenient to take a baby out of the car for every single little thing, the parents should not have left the baby in the car by itself, even if they were just walking across the parking lot. What's the old adage? "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." These parents are lucky that the would-be carjacker was not armed and that he did not put up much of a fight.
